Hand holding Italian passport with Italian flag and the word 'CITIZENSHIP'

A second citizenship in Europe = unlimited possibilities

Obtaining a Second Citizenship in Europe Offers Many Advantages

Citizenship entitles you to all the rights and privileges guaranteed by a country's government. For many European countries, these rights include universal healthcare, free or affordable education (including university), weeks of paid leave annually, paid maternal/paternal leave, and the ability to live and work throughout the entire European Union (27 countries).

Americans typically gain citizenship in a European country by naturalization. The requirements differ from country to country, but generally you must:

  • Live in your selected country for five years without any significant absences.
  • Demonstrate that you pay taxes, have a stable income, and can financially support yourself.
  • Prove that you have integrated by showing ties to the community/culture and passing a language test.
  • Spent your entire time in the country legally.

Americans can also gain citizenship in a European country by marriage or ancestry.

Of all the citizenship pathways, marriage is the most straightforward. If you are married to a citizen of a European country, you can also become a citizen after a mandatory waiting period. The length of the waiting period differs from country to country, but they are generally less than five years. Some countries also require you to pass a language test to ensure integration. Please note that some countries require you to officially register your marriage before the waiting period is allowed to begin.

Citizenship by ancestry has been a wildly popular option for Americans over the past few years. Generally, you must have parents or grandparents who were citizens of your selected country at the time of your birth. Some countries require you to take a language test to prove that you have ties to their culture. Unfortunately, citizenship by ancestry pathways have become more restrictive in the past few years. If you qualify, citizenship by ancestry is still preferable to other options in most cases.

Whether you're considering a permanent move, looking for a backup plan, or seeking a second citizenship to enhance your passport portfolio, your Geostrata relocation advisor will help you find your path to success!
